Researchers have developed a low-rank modal optimization method for extremely large beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (XL-BD-RIS) that achieves fully connected performance with a 99% reduction in reconfigurable entries. This breakthrough enables scalable near-field communication systems by leveraging spherical-wave geometry to bypass the quadratic hardware and computational overhead previously required for massive RIS deployments.
